Alger County MI-VINE Coverage
MI-VINE is Michigan's free, confidential custody and court-status information and notification service. The state directs users to the VINELink search and registration portal or its telephone route. Supported events can include release, transfer, escape, and certain court changes. The service is designed for a specific person and participating agency, not as a public list of everyone released from Alger County Jail.
Official Michigan materials describe local coverage as participating county jails. The research did not locate a separate authoritative page that confirms Alger County Jail participation in every VINE feature. Test the person and agency in the live interface or call the Michigan service instead of assuming that statewide availability guarantees a local match. MDOC state-prison notifications also have their own rules. A person confined only in a county jail does not belong in OTIS, while an MDOC prisoner, parolee, or probationer may appear there.
VINELink does not cover federal Bureau of Prisons custody. If the known sentence is federal, use the BOP Inmate Locator. Immigration custody uses the ICE locator, and a county-to-ICE transfer can make a local VINE release event misleading if read as freedom from all custody.
Search an Alger County Inmate
The official VINELink portal starts with a state and person search. Use an exact name or supported identification number, then compare the agency and available identifiers before opening a record. Similar names are common. A result for an MDOC facility is not an Alger County Jail record simply because the person once lived in the county or was once held at Alger Correctional Facility.
- Select Michigan and choose the person or offender custody search.
- Enter the exact name or supported identification number. Retry known aliases and spellings when needed.
- Compare the agency, location, identifier, and other displayed facts before opening a match.
- Read the custody status, holding agency or location, and last update together.
- If the result says released, record the displayed agency, status, identifier, and update time.
- Check transfer and other-hold possibilities, then obtain the underlying Sheriff or MDOC record when durable proof is needed.

Read Alger County VINELink Results
A VINE result joins identity details with the reporting agency's current event. It is not a complete criminal-court file or certified jail release register. Treat every field as part of one agency's point-in-time report. When the page offers notification registration, that option means alerts are supported for the matched record and event types shown. It does not promise indefinite public retention.

If VINELink says released, ask what happened next. A person may have gone to the community, another jail, MDOC, federal custody, or immigration custody. For Alger County Jail, the Sheriff booking/release record can identify the release reason or destination. For an MDOC prisoner, OTIS can show a transfer, parole date, assigned field office, or discharge status. The Alger County release-record search sets out those separate proof routes.
Note: A roster disappearance and a VINE release alert are leads; the originating agency's release or transfer record gives the stronger documentary answer.
Register Alger County Release Alerts
Registration begins from the correct person record. Select only the event types and channels the live service offers. Phone, text, email, app, and TTY options can vary. Contact data must stay current. A shared switchboard is a poor phone choice because an automated call may need a private confirmation PIN and can arrive at any hour.
- Open the verified person record and choose registration or notification.
- Select supported events, such as release, transfer, escape, or a listed custody change.
- Choose phone, text, email, app, TTY, or another offered channel and enter the contact details.
- For phone calls, create a four-digit PIN and keep it available.
- Complete the confirmation. When a call arrives, enter the PIN followed by the pound key to acknowledge it.
- Update the registration if the phone number or email address changes.

The state guidance connects the online portal with Michigan support. Use the live registration flow because offered channels and screen labels may change.
Alger County Phone Alert Details
The official Michigan VINE telephone number is 800-770-7657, and the published TTY number is 866-847-1298. The brochure says an unanswered telephone alert can repeat until the PIN is entered or for as long as 72 hours. Calls can arrive overnight. Entering the four-digit PIN followed by the pound key confirms receipt and stops repeat calls for that notice.
Email and text messages do not use the telephone PIN. The brochure describes a single message per custody change for those channels. Multiple phone numbers or email addresses can be registered. If the PIN is lost, use the Michigan service's operator route. No notification channel should be the sole safety plan or the sole source for an official release date.
Two Alger County Notification Layers
Michigan uses a two-layer structure that matters in Alger County. A user can self-register through VINE for supported participating-county custody changes. Direct victims seeking the fuller set of MDOC state-prison notices, including parole eligibility, hearings, decisions, and other qualifying events, are directed to MDOC Crime Victim Services at 877-886-5401. The two systems are related, but they are not interchangeable.
For a county-jail event, first test the person and Alger County agency in VINELink. For a state-prison case, identify whether the needed notice is a general custody event or an MDOC victim-service notice. An ordinary VINELink registration should not be described as enrollment in every Parole Board notice. Conversely, the public Parole Board hearing material is not a searchable schedule for every routine prisoner interview.
This split also controls verification. A VINE notice reports the agency event. OTIS reports MDOC status and date fields. An official victim notice can report a covered Board or sentence event. The jail release register, parole order, or discharge certificate remains the better record when exact authority, time, or destination must be established.
Note: Alger County jail alerts and MDOC direct-victim notices serve different event sets, so registration in one does not establish coverage in the other.
No Alger County VINELink Match
A missing result is not proof that someone was released. Retry spelling, aliases, and a supported identifier. Check that Michigan and the correct agency were selected. The person may be outside a participating jail, in a different county, newly booked before an update, held under another name, transferred to MDOC, or outside VINE's scope. Contact the custodian when the search result conflicts with known facts.
For Alger County Jail, call the Sheriff and ask a narrow custody question using the full name and approximate booking date. Request the booking/release entry through county FOIA when a record is required. If transfer to state prison is indicated, search OTIS after processing time. A federal sentence belongs in the BOP locator. Suspected immigration custody belongs in the ICE current detainee locator and, for a past event, the agency's records process.
Alger County Custody Forks
The holding agency decides what a VINELink event can prove. A release reported by Alger County Jail concerns that local custody episode. It may reflect bond, time served, a court order, or movement to another authority, but the short alert may not provide the full reason and destination. Ask the Sheriff for the booking number, admission and release date and time, releasing authority, release reason, and destination when those details matter.
An MDOC event belongs to the state-prison and supervision path. OTIS can distinguish a prisoner, parolee, probationer, discharged person, or absconder and may show Date Paroled, Date Discharged, and Assigned Location. A prison transfer is not release. Parole is release from confinement while the sentence continues under MDOC control. Discharge is the later end of MDOC jurisdiction. VINELink can alert to an event, but OTIS and the MDOC record supply the fuller status context.
Federal and immigration paths require other systems. A BOP result can show a federal release date or that the person is not in BOP custody. The ICE locator is a current-custody tool, not a historical release archive. If an Alger County VINE result conflicts with either path, follow the receiving agency rather than assuming the local event ended all custody.
Confirm Alger County Release Alerts
Save the agency name, person identifier, displayed status, and update time when an alert arrives. Then verify the path. A local community release should be supported by the Alger County Sheriff's release record. A transfer to MDOC should later connect to an OTIS entry. A state-prison parole should show Date Paroled and an assigned supervision office, while a maximum discharge should show the end of MDOC jurisdiction.
Data can lag in either direction. The person may have left before the alert arrives, or a displayed release can be followed by another custody event. Phone statements are fast but temporary. Screens are convenient but can change. An agency record with the event date, time, reason, and destination is the strongest source for confirming what happened.
