Alger County Jail Release Paths
The Alger County Jail holds people in several legal postures. A person may be awaiting trial, serving a local sentence, waiting for transport, or held for another authority. A release on bond, personal recognizance, dismissal, a court order, or completion of a jail term may return someone to the community. The phrase “released from the jail” can also record the end of Alger County’s physical custody while another agency takes over.
A commitment to the Michigan Department of Corrections, a detainer, a writ, or another county’s warrant can cause a transfer. A detainer is a request that the jail keep or deliver a person for another authority. A writ is a court order that can move a person for a hearing or another legal purpose. Neither event is proof that the person is free. Ask for the release reason and destination with the release date and time.

Confirm an Alger Jail Release
No verified official Alger County roster, 24-hour list, 72-hour list, or release archive was found in the county sources. The reliable route starts with a narrow identity and custody question. Use a full name, date of birth if known, and an approximate booking date. A name alone can match the wrong person.
- Check the case in MiCOURT Case Search. Note the court, case number, bond, disposition, and sentence entries.
- Contact the Alger County Sheriff’s Office at 906-387-4444. Ask whether local custody ended and whether the destination was the community or another agency.
- Check VINELink for a reported custody event. Treat an alert as a prompt to verify, not as the permanent agency record.
- Submit a written county FOIA request when a durable release record is needed. Ask for the date, time, code, authority, and destination.
- If the record shows an MDOC commitment, use OTIS after intake processing. If it names another agency, follow that agency’s locator or records route.
Leaving the Alger County Jail list does not prove community release. A transfer also ends the local roster entry.
Alger Jail Release Records
The Sheriff’s booking and release record is the key local source. A focused request can seek the booking card or number, admission date and time, actual release date and time, inmate-release form, release code, legal authority, destination, bond record, property-release form, and booking photograph. Requesting the public, nonexempt portions lets the County redact protected material instead of treating the entire record as unavailable.
Michigan’s county sheriff retention schedule gives the inmate jacket a release-plus-ten-years period. The jacket may include intake records, booking cards, photographs, sentencing papers, transfer papers, bonds, warrants, property forms, and inmate-release forms. Separate property intake or release records have a shorter calendar-year-end-plus-one-year schedule. A retention period does not guarantee public access. Medical, juvenile, victim, security, and other exempt details may be withheld or redacted.

Request Alger Jail Release Proof
Alger County accepts a sufficiently descriptive written request without requiring one special form. Ask for electronic delivery and an itemized estimate before chargeable work begins.
The County ordinarily responds within five business days. It may issue one written extension of up to ten more business days. That is a deadline for the response decision, not a promise that a large record set will be produced at once. Alger may require a 50 percent good-faith deposit if an estimated fee exceeds $50. Chargeable labor is calculated in 15-minute units using the lowest-paid capable employee, while standard paper copies are capped at $0.10 per sheet. Under 15 minutes carries no labor charge under the published procedure.

Alger Release Orders and Bond
The court record and jail record answer different questions. The signed bond or release order shows legal authority. The Sheriff entry shows when staff completed physical release. Those timestamps can differ. The 93rd District Court accepts cash or credit card for bail, not checks. A bond-out leaves the criminal case open unless a later court event ends it.
For a jail-only sentence, a judgment and jail credit help explain the expected end date. Michigan’s county-jail good-time law, MCL 51.282, may allow one day of reduction for each six days of an eligible sentence, subject to forfeiture or restoration under the Sheriff’s rules. It cannot be used alone to calculate an Alger release date. Holds, misconduct, sentence structure, and a later court order can change the actual event.

Alger Jail Custody Details
The current Sheriff page says the jail can house 52 people and has an agreement for 18 Luce County inmates. That contract creates a useful records distinction. Alger County can document physical confinement and release from its building. Luce County may own the originating charge, bond, or disposition in a contract case. Keep “county of confinement” separate from “county of prosecution” in every search.
The legacy Sheriff page provides the official jail contact route at 101 E. Varnum Street. Its captured view shows the agency page used for local contact, not a public release feed.
The page supports direct verification through the Sheriff when no official recent-release interface exists. It does not identify a fixed release hour, exit door, weekend schedule, or family waiting point.
Contact Alger County Jail
General release and custody questions go to the Sheriff’s Office. Staff may confirm releasable facts by phone, but a call is not a certified record. Give the person’s full name and approximate booking date, then ask a narrow question about the custody destination. Do not assume that a court disposition has already reached jail staff or that a live status system updates at the same instant.

Alger Jail or LMF Release?
Alger County Jail and Alger Correctional Facility (LMF) share a place name but not an operator, record system, or release path. The Sheriff runs the county jail. MDOC runs LMF, a state prison that opened in 1990. A person at LMF does not need to have an Alger County criminal case, and the facility's location does not make the Sheriff custodian of that prisoner's release file.
Use the booking and release register for an Alger County Jail event. Use OTIS, the Parole Board record, assigned field-office information, or a discharge certificate for an LMF prison event. If a felony judgment moved someone from the jail into MDOC custody, connect the court judgment and Sheriff transfer form to the later OTIS prisoner entry. That sequence documents continued custody, not release to the community.
Alger Release Property and Travel
Property questions need their own record. Michigan’s retention schedule distinguishes an inmate jacket from separate property intake and release documents. Ask the Sheriff whether clothing, identification, funds, or another item was returned at release and whether a property-release form remains available. If someone else must collect property, call first for the jail’s authorization and pickup rules. No official source reviewed gives a standing Alger release door, waiting area, or property-counter schedule.
Transportation also requires direct planning in rural Alger County. ALTRAN provides county dial-a-ride service and a regional Marquette route, with Schedule-a-Ride at 906-387-4845. The research does not establish a jail-door stop or guaranteed pickup at any release time. Family or friends should confirm the actual exit and waiting instructions with the jail, then make a separate booking with ALTRAN. Outlying service can require advance notice. A 24-hour Sheriff phone line does not mean the jail promises releases on a fixed public timetable.
A person released on bond may still have court dates and pretrial conditions. Regional pretrial services can monitor compliance, provide reminders, and report alleged violations, but enrollment is not a release record. Keep the judge’s order, bond receipt, Sheriff release event, and any supervision paperwork as separate documents. Together they explain why custody ended, when the door opened, and what duties continued afterward.
