No Alger 72-Hour Feed
The official Alger County Sheriff page supplies the local agency route, but it does not display a rolling three-day release list. No official fields, update cadence, web retention period, photo column, or separate archive were verified. The County also publishes no confirmed current jail roster that could be rewound to reconstruct the prior 72 hours.
That online limit does not erase the government records created during booking, confinement, release, or transfer. Michigan’s county sheriff retention schedule identifies an inmate jacket that can contain booking cards, inmate-release forms, bonds, court papers, transfer documentation, property-release forms, and mug shots. The jacket is assigned release plus ten years under that schedule, although retention does not guarantee public access to every part. FOIA exemptions, redaction, and legal holds still apply.
Define Alger’s Three-Day Window
A rolling 72-hour period and “the last three calendar days” are not always the same. At 3 p.m. Monday, a rolling period begins at 3 p.m. Friday. Three calendar dates could begin at midnight Saturday. State the exact start and end timestamps in Eastern Time so County staff do not have to guess which records are sought. If the event day is known, three date-specific release-log requests may be easier for the coordinator to process.
Weekend and holiday boundaries make the wider window useful. A court order may be entered before jail processing finishes, and a notification may arrive after the physical event is recorded. Alger publishes no standard release hour, exit door, weekend timetable, holiday procedure, or family waiting point. The Sheriff number is answered around the clock, but 24-hour agency operation does not mean releases occur on a fixed public schedule.
For a period that began less than a day ago, use the Released Last 24 Hours method. It keeps the request narrower. When the day is uncertain, the 72-hour inquiry trades speed for a better chance of catching a release that crossed midnight or a nonbusiness day.
Check Alger 72-Hour Releases
The proper sequence starts with the custody system and ends with documentary confirmation. A county jail release, an MDOC parole, and a federal transfer may all remove a person from local custody, but they belong to different record owners.
- Write the boundaries. Record the start and end date and time in Eastern Time, plus the moment the search begins.
- Identify the scope. Decide whether the request covers every releasable event or one person. Supply name, aliases, birth date if known, and approximate admission date for a named inquiry.
- Call Alger County Jail. Use 906-387-4444 to ask whether a known custody episode ended and whether the recorded destination was community release or transfer.
- Check supporting records. Review MiCOURT for judicial action and test VINELink for an agency-reported custody event.
- Send the bounded request. Use Alger County FOIA for the release log or named inmate-release form across the fixed window.
- Follow the destination. Search MDOC OTIS, BOP, ICE, or another county only when the Sheriff or court record points to that custodian.
Save a no-record response. It documents the County’s search at that time, even though it does not settle what another agency may hold. A phone answer can guide the next step, while the written government response provides a more durable account.
Alger Three-Day Record Fields
There are no online feed columns to report. The table instead identifies the fields that make a 72-hour production useful. A request for “recent inmates” is less precise than a request for existing release-log entries and the specific data points needed to distinguish release from continued custody.
| Field | Why it matters across 72 hours |
|---|---|
| Name and booking number | Separates repeat bookings and people who share a name. |
| Admission date and time | Links each event to the correct Alger County Jail custody episode. |
| Release date and exact time | Places the event inside or outside the requested three-day window. |
| Release reason or code | Helps interpret bond, time served, court order, or another recorded basis. |
| Releasing authority | Shows which office authorized or processed the custody change. |
| Destination | Distinguishes the community from MDOC, another jail, a detainer, court, or other custody. |
Release codes require context. Bond ends that booking’s confinement after the required condition, not the criminal case. Time served refers to the custodial component identified by the authority. Dismissal may resolve one charge while another remains. Transfer is not release to the community. A missing destination should prompt a focused follow-up because it leaves the key custody question unresolved.
File an Alger 72-Hour Request
Alger County’s official procedure accepts FOIA requests by mail or in person at the Alger County Courthouse, 101 Court Street, Munising, MI 49862, by fax at 906-387-2156, or by email at foia@algercounty.gov. Mark the cover or subject “FOIA.” A useful list request asks for all public, nonexempt release-log or inmate-release-form entries between exact timestamps, then lists the desired identity, event, authority, and destination fields.
A named-person request can also identify the inmate jacket, booking card, admission date, inmate-release form, release code, destination, bond record, and transfer document. Ask for electronic copies and segregable records with exempt material redacted. If the purpose is to document property return or a booking photograph, name those records separately because they can follow different series and public-access analysis.
The County generally must make its response decision within five business days after receipt and may issue one written extension of up to ten additional business days. It can grant, partially grant, deny with a legal basis, or certify that no responsive record exists. A list covering many people may require more search and redaction than a named-person request. Request an itemized estimate and advance notice before costs pass a set amount.
Alger may seek a 50% good-faith deposit when the estimate exceeds $50. Chargeable labor uses 15-minute increments and the lowest-paid capable employee under the County procedure. Work under 15 minutes carries no labor charge. Standard paper copies are capped at $0.10 per sheet, while actual mailing cost may be charged. Electronic delivery may reduce copy and mailing expense.
Test Alger Roster Provenance
Search engines surface pages with official-sounding Alger roster names, yet no verified County feed supports them. Their date stamps may refer to an arrest, scrape, upload, or page refresh rather than a release. They can also blur current custody with historical booking information. Provenance means knowing which public body created the fact and when its copy was updated.
Use an unofficial result only to form a better question. Confirm the local event with the Sheriff or County response. Compare the court’s order for legal authority. Use VINELink only for the reporting agency’s point-in-time custody event. If the record says MDOC, open the official OTIS route. Each channel should retain its proper scope.
Note: Web absence has no documented Alger retention meaning; the underlying jail record may remain available after a person disappears from any live view.
Separate Alger Release From Transfer
A 72-hour list request can capture events that look alike in a simple “out” column but lead to very different outcomes. A person bonded from Alger County Jail is outside that jail while the case may remain open. Someone committed to MDOC has left the jail but remains confined. A federal detainee delivered to the U.S. Marshals Service stays in federal custody. An ICE pickup ends the local jail episode without proving a community return.
| Recorded path | Next confirmation source |
|---|---|
| Bond or court-ordered local release | Sheriff release time plus the Alger court order and docket. |
| Commitment or transfer to MDOC | OTIS prisoner status after intake processing, plus the judgment and transfer record. |
| Release on parole from LMF | OTIS Date Paroled and Parolee status, not the county jail release log. |
| Federal or immigration pickup | Owning federal order, agency locator, or targeted agency record request. |
For a person known by name, the Alger County released inmate search paths explain which agency to follow. For a full three-day list, preserve destination as a required field. Without it, the production can show that Alger custody ended but not whether custody itself ended.
Weekend Alger Release Verification
The 72-hour view is most useful when courts, records offices, and jail operations move on different clocks. A judge may sign an order before the release desk completes identity checks, property processing, or another hold review. The docket can appear first. A VINELink message may follow when the participating agency submits the change. Neither timestamp should be silently substituted for the actual Sheriff release time.
There is no verified Alger public rule promising a standard weekend or holiday release time. Family members should call the jail for current exit and waiting instructions rather than infer them from the Sheriff’s around-the-clock phone coverage. If transportation is needed, ALTRAN Schedule-a-Ride is available at 906-387-4845, but no source guarantees a jail-door stop or same-day pickup.
After the window closes, record the result source and check time. If one source still says in custody while another reports release, ask the reporting agency to reconcile the lag. A three-day window catches more events, but only source-specific confirmation tells what each event means.
