Understanding Alger County Releases
A person can leave Alger County Jail by posting bond, receiving a court-ordered release, completing a jail sentence, obtaining dismissal of the only holding charge, or being released on personal recognizance. Those paths may return the person to the community. Other exits do not. A commitment to the Michigan Department of Corrections, a transfer to another jail, a federal writ, or an immigration detainer keeps the person in government custody. Even escape or death can close a local roster entry without being a community release.
The key is to confirm both the event and the destination. The Alger County Sheriff’s Office owns the local booking and physical-release record. A court order explains the legal basis for release, but its time may differ from the jail’s processing time. For a state prisoner, MDOC records distinguish parole from discharge. Parole means the person has left prison under conditions and agent oversight. Discharge means the MDOC sentence and its supervision have ended.
The current Alger County Sheriff page describes both the jail’s stated capacity and its contract arrangement for people held from neighboring Luce County. That arrangement matters because the county of confinement and county of prosecution may differ.
Alger County Release Paths
Words used in custody records have narrow meanings. “Bond” confirms release from one booking after the court’s bond terms were met, not the end of the case. “Time served” concerns the custodial part of a sentence, but another case or supervision may remain. Probation is a court-ordered community sentence and may follow a jail term. A transfer means custody continued somewhere else.
| Recorded path | What it means | Best next record |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or recognizance | Release from the jail under a court order while the case may continue | Sheriff release entry and court bond order |
| Time served | The stated jail term ended, subject to any other hold | Judgment and actual jail release time |
| Parole | Release from state prison into MDOC community supervision | OTIS status, Date Paroled, and assigned office |
| Maximum discharge | MDOC jurisdiction ended at the controlling sentence endpoint | OTIS discharge fields or discharge certificate |
| Transfer or detainer | The local jail’s custody ended but another authority took custody | Release destination and receiving-agency record |
A dismissed charge also needs context. Another charge can still hold the person. A court commitment to MDOC explains why someone vanished from the local jail, yet that is a move into state prison rather than a release. These distinctions keep an Alger County released-inmate search tied to the correct agency.
Note: A court disposition describes legal action, while the Sheriff’s record supplies the actual Alger County Jail exit event.
Alger County Release Record Fields
A useful Alger County Jail record identifies who was held, the agency that held the person, when physical custody began and ended, and the reason or destination recorded at release. Request enough fields to separate people with similar names and to connect the jail event with the right court case. Not every record contains every field, and confidential or exempt parts may be redacted.
| Field | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Legal name and aliases | The identity used for the booking and other known names |
| Date of birth and identifiers | Details used to avoid a name-only match |
| Booking number | The local number tying intake, charges, property, and release together |
| Admission date and time | When Alger County Jail accepted physical custody |
| Release date and time | When the jail recorded the end of that custody episode |
| Release code or authority | Bond, court order, sentence completion, transfer, or another basis |
| Destination | Community release or transfer to a named receiving authority |
| Charge, court, and case | The legal matter linked to the booking |
Michigan’s county-sheriff retention schedule says an inmate jacket may hold booking cards, mug shots, sentence records, bonds, warrants, property-release forms, inmate-release forms, and transfer-to-prison documents. Series 11.210 assigns that jacket retention for ten years after release. Separate property and receipt series have shorter periods. Retention does not guarantee public access, since legal holds, redaction, and exemptions can still apply.
Request Alger County Release Records
The Alger County FOIA route accepts a writing that describes an existing record. No special form is mandatory. A focused request should name the person, give a date of birth if known, state the approximate booking or release period, and ask for the booking/release entry, actual release time, release code, legal authority, and destination. Ask for the booking photograph or property-release form as separate items when needed.
- Write “FOIA” on the cover or email subject and describe the named record, not a broad question for staff to research.
- Send it to Alger County Courthouse, 101 Court Street, Munising, MI 49862, fax 906-387-2156, or email foia@algercounty.gov.
- Request electronic copies, redaction of exempt parts rather than full withholding, and an itemized estimate before chargeable work begins.
- Keep the grant, partial denial, denial, or no-record response as proof of what the custodian searched on that date.
The ordinary response decision is due within five business days after receipt. Alger County may issue one written extension of up to ten more business days. A large production can take longer after that decision. The county may seek a 50 percent good-faith deposit when its estimate exceeds $50. Standard paper copies are capped at $0.10 per sheet, and chargeable labor is calculated in 15-minute units with no labor charge for work under 15 minutes.

Michigan FOIA, MCL 15.231 through 15.246, governs county administrative records. Court files use court rules and the clerk instead. A sealed or nonpublic record may not appear through the normal route. If a conviction has been set aside, use the court order and the specific custodian’s correction process rather than assuming every older copy vanished.
Which Alger Release Record Proves Exit?
Alger County has a two-record proof problem. A docket entry from MiCOURT Case Search can show that a judge reduced bond, dismissed a count, imposed time served, ordered probation, or committed the person to MDOC. It explains legal authority. The Sheriff’s booking or release entry shows when staff completed the physical custody change and whether the person went home or to another agency.
Use the 93rd District Court record for local bond and misdemeanor events and the 11th Circuit Court file for felony judgments. The clerk’s register of actions, signed judgment, release order, or probation-discharge order may be needed when the online docket is thin. Michigan excludes the judiciary from the executive-agency definition used by FOIA, so Alger County’s FOIA coordinator does not supply the court file.
The 93rd District Court’s bond information also shows why bond-out is not final disposition. The Sheriff time proves jail exit, while a receipt and order explain why it was authorized. Later closure of a case does not change the original release event into sentence completion.
The official MiCOURT search shows the court-selection and case-search route used to find the judicial half of an Alger County release.
The court result should be matched with the Sheriff’s actual release record before treating the date as a physical jail exit.
Find Alger County Released Inmates
Begin with the last known custody system. The Alger County Jail does not publish a verified live roster, rolling release list, or recent-release archive. A local arrest or jail stay therefore starts with the Sheriff and court. A prison sentence or stay at Alger Correctional Facility starts with OTIS. Federal sentences use the Bureau of Prisons locator, while suspected immigration custody uses ICE’s locator and records channel.
- Search the participating court by name or case number and note the order, charge, disposition, and sentence entries.
- Check VINELink for a current custody status or a reported change, then confirm the holding agency and identifiers.
- Call the Alger County Sheriff’s Office with the full name and approximate booking date, and ask whether the event was community release or transfer.
- Submit a written Alger County records request when documentary proof of date, time, reason, or destination is needed.
- Follow any named transfer to OTIS, another jail, BOP, ICE, or the agency shown on the release record.
A phone answer is fast but hard to preserve. A portal can lag. A court entry proves judicial action but may not show the minute the jail completed release. The durable answer is a government record from the agency that performed the event, checked against a second channel when the distinction matters.
A current roster, when one exists, describes people still held. Once custody ends or shifts to another authority, the local entry may drop even though a booking and release record remains.
Note: Alger County publishes no verified 24-hour or 72-hour release feed, so named-person and written-record routes are the sound fallback.
Alger County OTIS Release Search
The Michigan Department of Corrections OTIS page covers current prisoners, parolees, and probationers under MDOC supervision, plus people discharged within the past three years. It does not cover a person sentenced only to Alger County Jail. Search by MDOC number when known. A name search needs checks against age, alias, sentence county, court file number, physical details, and offense data before accepting a match.
| Search field | Use | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| MDOC number | Most precise state identifier | Not the Alger County booking number |
| Name | Broad starting point | Try aliases and spelling variants |
| Status | Narrows prisoner, parole, probation, or discharged records | Read status before interpreting dates |
| Age, sex, and race | Helps distinguish similar names | Do not rely on one trait alone |
| Marks and location | Adds identity and assignment checks | Location can change after transfer |
“Parole” means release from prison while MDOC control continues. “Discharged” means MDOC jurisdiction ended. “Prisoner” still indicates state confinement even when the assigned location changes. An Earliest Release Date is the point at which the Parole Board may gain jurisdiction in the usual case, not a promised release date. The Maximum Discharge Date is the outer sentence endpoint under the applicable calculation.
The live OTIS form displays the fields used to search a state corrections record.
Once a result opens, compare its current status with Date Paroled, Date Discharged, discharge reason, and assigned location instead of reading one date alone.
Correct Alger County OTIS Release Data
An OTIS error must go to the office that owns the source fact. Court-derived details, such as the conviction or judgment, go first to the sentencing court. Supervision details, assigned office data, and an absconder status go to the supervising parole or probation office. MDOC updates OTIS after the proper court order or supervising authority directs the change.
This fork is more useful than sending a broad complaint to the portal. Record the MDOC number, sentence county, court file number, status, and date viewed. Then identify whether the claimed error came from a court record or supervision record. The MDOC correction guidance also explains that ordinary discharged records stay in public OTIS scope for three years, while a set-aside or another legal removal rule uses a different process.
Older Alger County Release Records
OTIS has a defined public window. It includes people discharged within three years, then removes ordinary records from that public scope. Absence after that point does not prove the state never held the person. It means a different record route is needed. MDOC’s contact directory identifies a past-prisoner records address for records up to six years after release, and older state material may require an archival inquiry.
The practical ladder is OTIS first, then a narrow MDOC request for the discharge certificate, parole order, or needed date fields. Contact MDOC past-prisoner records at MDOC-Records_Retention@michigan.gov when the release falls within its stated six-year path. For older files, describe the person, MDOC number, sentence county, and time range to the Archives of Michigan route identified by MDOC.
County jail retention is separate. Alger County’s inmate jacket has a release-plus-ten-years schedule, so an item can remain in the government file after it disappears from a web search. A request can still be denied or redacted under a valid exemption, and the schedule does not promise that each field was created.
Two Alger County Release Systems
Alger County has a locally confusing name match. Alger County Jail is run by the Sheriff’s Office for local custody. Alger Correctional Facility, also called LMF, is an MDOC state prison located in the county. A person at LMF need not have an Alger County criminal case, and the Sheriff does not own that prisoner’s release or discharge record.
A move from the county jail to MDOC is a transfer. The circuit-court judgment, Sheriff transfer record, and later OTIS entry form the chain. A move from LMF to another Michigan prison is also a transfer, even though the person left the building. Parole from LMF is release from prison into supervision, while maximum discharge ends MDOC jurisdiction. The two facilities therefore require different records, offices, and search tools.
| Facility | Operator | Where release proof lives |
|---|---|---|
| Alger County Jail | Alger County Sheriff’s Office | Local booking/release record, jail register, and court file |
| Alger Correctional Facility (LMF) | Michigan Department of Corrections | OTIS, Parole Board or field-office records, and MDOC discharge documents |
Note: No separate federal, ICE, city, or regional detention facility was verified inside Alger County’s official facility directories.
Alger Release Alerts and Federal Checks
MI-VINE is Michigan’s custody and court-event notification service. Search Michigan by name or a supported identifier, confirm the reporting agency, then choose an offered phone, text, email, or app alert. For phone calls, create a four-digit PIN and enter it with the pound key when the alert arrives. A reported release is a point-in-time custody event, not a certified release record or proof that no other hold exists.
Official state materials describe county service in terms of participating jails, but the research found no separate page that guarantees Alger participation. Test the named person and agency in VINELink or call 800-770-7657. If the result changes, save the displayed agency, status, identifier, and time, then obtain the Sheriff or MDOC record when exact reason and destination matter.
For a federal sentence, the BOP Inmate Locator accepts a federal identifier or a name narrowed by age, race, and sex. A past release date with no facility marks the BOP custody event, but federal supervision or another agency’s custody may remain. ICE’s locator covers current detainees and people released from ICE custody within the last 60 days; it is not a historical archive. A person on a federal writ may leave Alger County Jail for the U.S. Marshals Service without entering the community.
The official VINELink portal provides the custody-search and alert-registration starting point.
The agency name and current status shown there determine which government custodian should supply the lasting release record.
Where Alger Release Status Appears
Each system answers a different question. A county roster is about present local custody, while a release entry documents the end of one jail episode. OTIS covers MDOC prisoners and supervision. Court files show orders and case outcomes. BOP and ICE cover their own federal custody systems. Matching the last known custodian to the right tool avoids treating a transfer as release.
| Situation | First place to check | What confirms it |
|---|---|---|
| Still in Alger County Jail | Sheriff’s Office or VINELink if the agency participates | Current local custody statement |
| Released from Alger County Jail | Sheriff and Alger County FOIA | Release date, time, reason, and destination |
| State prisoner or parolee | MDOC OTIS | Current status, assigned place or office, and date fields |
| Federal sentenced prisoner | BOP Inmate Locator | BOP release date or a requested release document |
| ICE custody or recent exit | ICE Online Detainee Locator | Current or recent status, followed by ICE records when needed |
| Court-authorized release | MiCOURT and the clerk | Signed order paired with the jail’s physical-release entry |
Can one portal prove every Alger County release? No. The county jail, MDOC, courts, BOP, and ICE maintain separate records. Follow the transfer destination until the record shows a true community release or final discharge.
